The Thanksgiving Gathering has become an annual celebration for the children of Doris Gaiter (Bernard) and Mildred Hough (Algie) since 1994. It started in Alpharetta, Georgia, and has grown throughout the years with the births, marriages, and families' mergers. Annually we identify the next location for this gathering, and we pray for volunteers. From Alpharetta, Memphis, Washington DC, Houston, Chicago, to East St. Louis, this event has proven to be a great family gathering day. The name of the event DeLandro has its roots in New Orleans and is the surname of our grandmother Victoria DeLandro Jackson (1898-1986). Family Gathering meal satisfied all the senses. The nose went crazy from the delicious fragrances of foods. The eyes speculated on what to put on your plate. The ears, hearing the sounds of the laughter, football games, children, adults, people setting out the food, and much more. The touch of a loved one as we greet one another with hugs and laughter and try to catch up with family and friends. The greatest of our senses we waited to satisfy was the sense of taste. Okay, we come to the gathering to be with family and friends, but if the food weren't so delicious, we probably wouldn't have traveled thousands of miles to be thereOur Family Reunion is our tradition, Thursday we gather, about 50 to 100+ people, to eat our version of a traditional Thanksgiving feast. We prepare enough food for a small army. It is marvelous. Expert hands have prepared the food, the arrangement of the food strategically placed, with the assortment of foods to satisfy all special dietary needs.
